Why does my elbow hurt?

Tennis elbow, bursitis, and golfers elbow are the most common causes of elbow pain seen in daily OPD. Let’s discuss the symptoms and cure with Dr. Anurag Aggarwal, Interventional Pain and Spine Specialist in Indirapuram, Ghaziabad.

Symptoms of tennis elbow

You have moved into a new house and you have been doing a lot of painting. You have got severe pain in the outer aspect of your elbow. you cant even turn a doorknob or hold a cup of tea.

It could be tennis elbow, which despite its name, isn’t only due to playing tennis. It can be due to any job with a backhand motion where the tendons of your elbow are overloaded.

Cure: tennis elbow can get better by applying anti-inflammatory gels, correcting Vit d deficiency, wearing tennis elbow band, and hot fomentation. If it is not getting better a steroid shot or PRP shot may be needed depending on your history and duration of symptoms.

Symptoms of bursitis

You have pain and tenderness in your left elbow. You are right-handed and while working on your computer for long arms, you need to lean on your left elbow.

It could be bursitis, a painful inflammation affecting the small fluid-filled sacs( bursae) that cushion the bones, tendons, and muscles around the joint.

Cure: Stop leaning, take anti-inflammatory analgesics, apply hot fomentation. In a few cases, a steroid shot at inflamed bursae may be needed.

Symptoms of golfers elbow

You have pain and tenderness on the inside of your elbow extending down your inner arm, it feels stiff and your hands and wrist feel weak. Your finger feels numb and tingly.

It could be golfers elbow where muscles and tendons that control your wrist and fingers have been damaged after forceful wrist and finger movements

Cure: rest, ice pack application to the affected area, applying ultrasonics by a physiotherapist, and taking anti-inflammatory analgesics help most people. Those not getting better may need some intervention.
