A story of a child born prematurely due to abruptio placenta

I had not applied this much butter on my bread for breakfast since school days. But this was a special morning. We were ready for our road trip to Bharatpur sanctuary, a holiday trip after a 2 year waits due to covid restrictions. The night before we were getting our prep ready. For me, that means lots of talks. We stayed way past our pre-decided bedtime talking about the journey. We all were excited and were finalizing micro-plans like laying out what I will wear, exact morning schedules.

We finally dozed off at around 10:30 pm. 11.30 pm the phone rang. A pre-term pregnant woman under my care had an emergency. She was a 31-week prime patient, wife of a doctor and on phone, she said that she had started bleeding heavily. She had a spotting episode a few days back, but it settled with rest, but this time bleeding was more. I suspected it to be abruptio placenta (Placental abruption occurs when the placenta separates from the inner wall of the uterus before birth. Placental abruption can deprive the baby of oxygen and nutrients and cause heavy bleeding in the mother)

As I advised her admission into the hospital, my face fell. “All schedules are off!”، I thought. My husband took one look at me and reaffirmed, “your patient is more important than everything else. Don’t worry. It doesn’t matter” I sighed and left it on God. I put a formal coat over my clothes and drove to the hospital.

Reached hospital and after examining the patient found that babies heart rate was running a bit low. We immediately rushed her for caesarean section informing the pediatrician about the premature child so that nursery team is ready. I was right, the placenta had started separating, Caesarean went uneventful, and a 1500 gm premature male child was handed over to pediatric team. I reached around 2 pm back home.

We planned to go ahead with our 2-day vacation started our journey at 7 is in the morning with my family along with my best friend Monika. It was a 3.30 hr. journey and I kept inquiring about the child’s health. The pediatrician told that “he is on CPAP mode of ventilation and required surfactant as well” and these are looking stable. I called the duty doctor to mobilize my patient after removing the foleys catheter. She was discharged on the very next day, but the child was still in nursery requiring CPAP assistance. My whole mind was hi-jacked by my patient’s needs. I saw stories I will never forget.

We reached Mathura on our way to Bharatpur and in Krishna Janmabhoomi I prayed for the Child’s health. I was optimistic and faithful that the newborn will be fine. We reached the #birdsantuary and enjoyed the cycle ride to the 20 km park. Collecting stories, taking pictures, and intermittently relaxing watching the beautiful birds was an unforgettable experience.

The newborn was also doing well and will be discharged after he had been in nursery for 3 weeks when he will reach 34 weeks gestational age.

Several of my babies I remember by the landmarks of that day in my life. I thought of my #vactionbaby and sought blessings of health and fitness for him from the divine.
