Balloon Compression For Trigeminal Neuralgia

Effective Minimally Invasive Treatment for Severe Facial Pain

Balloon Compression is a specialized minimally invasive procedure used to treat Trigeminal Neuralgia, a condition that causes sudden, severe, electric shock-like pain on one side of the face. The procedure works by gently compressing the trigeminal ganglion, reducing its ability to transmit pain signals to the brain and providing long-lasting pain relief.

This treatment is particularly beneficial for patients who have not responded adequately to medications or are seeking an alternative to more invasive surgical procedures.

Indications

Balloon Compression may be recommended for:

  • Trigeminal Neuralgia
  • Recurrent facial pain despite medication
  • Patients unable to tolerate long-term drug therapy
  • Elderly patients or those unsuitable for major surgery
  • Refractory facial pain syndromes involving the trigeminal nerve

What is the Trigeminal Ganglion?

The trigeminal ganglion is a collection of nerve cells located at the base of the skull. It contains the three branches of the trigeminal nerve that provide sensation to the face:

  • Ophthalmic Branch (Forehead and Eye Region)
  • Maxillary Branch (Cheek and Upper Jaw)
  • Mandibular Branch (Lower Jaw and Chin)

By temporarily compressing the ganglion with a small balloon, pain-transmitting nerve fibers can be selectively disrupted, resulting in significant pain reduction.

Procedure

Balloon Compression is performed under general anesthesia using fluoroscopic (real-time X-ray) guidance.

During the Procedure

  • The patient is placed under general anesthesia.
  • A specialized needle is inserted through the cheek and guided toward the foramen ovale, a natural opening at the base of the skull.
  • A small catheter with a balloon at its tip is passed through the needle.
  • The balloon is carefully inflated for a short period to compress the trigeminal ganglion.
  • Once adequate compression is achieved, the balloon is deflated and removed.
  • A small dressing is applied to the treatment site.

The entire procedure usually takes approximately 30 minutes.

Benefits

  • Significant relief from Trigeminal Neuralgia pain
  • Minimally invasive procedure
  • No surgical incision required
  • Short treatment duration
  • Rapid recovery
  • Reduced need for pain medications
  • Suitable for patients who are not candidates for major surgery
  • Can be repeated if symptoms recur

Recovery and Results

  • Most patients experience pain relief immediately or within a few days.
  • Temporary facial numbness is common and often indicates successful treatment.
  • Patients may be observed overnight or discharged the same day depending on their condition.
  • Normal activities can usually be resumed within a few days.
  • Pain relief may last for several years in many patients.

Special Instructions

Before the Procedure

  • Fast for at least 6 hours before the procedure.
  • Continue routine medications unless advised otherwise.
  • Inform your doctor about all medications and medical conditions.
  • Blood-thinning medications such as Aspirin, Clopidogrel, or Warfarin may need to be stopped before treatment.
  • Arrange for a family member or friend to accompany you home.

After the Procedure

  • Rest for the remainder of the day.
  • Follow all discharge and medication instructions carefully.
  • Attend scheduled follow-up appointments.
  • Report any unusual symptoms immediately to your doctor.

Possible Side Effects and Complications

These symptoms usually improve gradually over time.

Rare Complications

  • Infection
